Touring concert and teaching artist, Dr. Patricia Surman is Adjunct Instructor of Flute at Northeastern State University and Instructor of Music at Tulsa Community College. Before teaching in Oklahoma, she taught flute and chamber music at Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas, and was a teaching fellow at the University of North Texas. She earned her BM in flute performance from the University of Redlands, MM in flute performance and MM musicology from the University of North Texas, and completed her DMA in flute performance with a minor in music theory at UNT. In addition, she holds a diploma from the Académie Internationale d’Eté de Nice where she was a student of Philippe Bernold. Patricia’s dissertation, “Ida Gotkovsky’s Eolienne pour flute et harpe in Theory and Practice: A Critical Analysis” contains the most current and extensive biography of Gotkovsky and the only theoretical writing on Gotkovksy’s flute compositions.

As an orchestral and wind ensemble player, Patricia is currently a member of the Tulsa Symphony, plays flute and piccolo with the Tulsa Opera Orchestra and the Starlight Bands. Previously, Patricia was a member of the Flower Mound Chamber Orchestra and the Redlands Symphony. She has been a concerto soloist on flute and piccolo with the Riverside Camerata, the Keene Camerata, the UNT Flute Choir, and the Flutissimo Académie in Les Vovires, France, and the Tulsa Community College Band.

She has appeared in recital extensively across the United States and in Europe. Recent engagements include engagements in California, Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Tennessee, North Carolina; and Madrid and Alcala, Spain. Her live concert at Palacio Laredo in Alcala de Henares appeared on Spanish Solidaria TV. She was an invited performer in the 2009 Lewisville Lake International Chamber Music Series, guest and faculty artist recitals at Methodist University, Southwestern Adventist University, and Northeastern State University, Tulsa Performing Arts Center’s Brown Bag It Concerts, Oklahoma City Public Library’s Noontime Series, Mu Phi Epsilon Series at the Dallas Public Library, and Flower Mound Lamb of God Saturday Concert Series as well as guest speaker at the Mid-South Flute Society’s 2009 Festival.

Patricia has commissioned and premiered flute works in various genres, spanning from electoacoustic works with interactive electronics to strictly acoustic compositions. Chapman Welch and Paul David Thomas.  Patricia studied with Mary Karen Clardy, Sara Andon and Cynthia Ellis, and has participated in master classes with Trevor Wye, Alexa Still, Kathleen Chastain, Ann Deiner Giles, Peter Lloyd, Ransom Wilson, William Bennett, Susan Milan, and others. She can be heard in recordings on the GIA and Mark Custom labels and as a soloist on the GIA Choarlworks CD series.

Upcoming engagements for the 2010-2011 season include recital and masterclass appearances at Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Northwestern Louisiana State University, and concerto and recital performances in California.
